Fast Track 100

PMH’s owner Mike Porritt sells imported right-hand-drive cars at discounted prices through his Carshock brand. ‘People have realised that they don’t have to go and haggle in a big glossy showroom,’ he says. ‘They just want a good price.’ Porritt set up his Newcastle company in 1997 with his wife Alison. The business took off in 1998 after government deregulation of the motor retail industry and at a time when the traditional dealers had been branded with the ‘rip-off Britain’ tag. Sales have risen 137% a year from £260,000 in 1998 to £3.4m in 2001, when PHM had 14 staff.
