Fast Track 100

Mike Porritt, the founder of Carshock, is known for plain speaking – ‘Car manufacturers’ list prices are a sick joke,’ he says. A former UK board director at Fiat, Porritt founded the car discount chain Carshock in 1997 with his wife Alison. With four outlets in northeast England, the Newcastle upon Tyne company claims to sell imported and British-sourced cars at prices up to 35% less than those of franchised dealers. Business has boomed since British and EU initiatives put an end to ‘rip-off Britain’. Sales at Carshock have grown 93% a year from £1.2m in 2000 to £8.3m in 2003.
