In 1968, at the age of 23, Grahame Whateley says he chalked up the first of many successful deals, when he sold a chain of properties to Dillon’s Newsagents. The sale enabled him to set up the west Midlands contractor Castlemore, which builds and rents out large properties to customers such as Sainsbury and BT. Developments are a mixture of office and retail space, ranging from a Grade I listed site in Edinburgh to the redevelopment of a former gasworks in London. Profits, helped by the booming property market and rising income from rents, grew 48% a year from £11.9m in 2000 to £38.7m in 2003
