Catering Alliance manages staff restaurants and was founded in 1996 by Michael Scott, Sean Hagan and Russell Scandrett, all of whom had senior positions in the catering industry. The company refurbishes and runs the restaurants, supplying everything from catering staff to five-course dinners and vending machines. The founders began in Scott’s flat with a laptop, but the company has expanded from its Warwickshire base to operate across the country, and intends to open in London by the end of the year. In an industry dominated by large multinationals, Catering Alliance differentiates itself by offering a personalised service. It aims to offer fresh food with greater variety – for example, sandwiches made from speciality breads – and well-designed restaurants, a policy that won it a £1m contract at Asda’s Leeds headquarters. This approach has driven up sales by 116% a year, from £980,000 in 1996 to £9.9m in 1999.
