When database designer Mike McPherson lost his job in 1994 he worked on a project to develop database software that helps manage the construction and maintenance of mobile-phone networks. Now his company, CellTracker, supplies this software to operators and equipment makers such as Nokia and Ericsson. It claims that its software is used in 150 networks in 40 countries. Sales have risen 83% a year from £667,000 in 1999 to £2.2m in 2001.
