Originally set up in 1993 to take advantage of deregulation in the energy sector, this company spotted an opportunity and quickly refocused on telecoms reselling. Chess buys fixed-line, mobile and broadband products from operators such as BT and Cable & Wireless, and resells them to businesses that include Bose and Go Ape. Under founder and chief executive David Pollock, the Cheshire company is expanding into new areas, such as Voip. Numerous acquisitions, including nine in the past year funded by Royal Bank of Scotland, have contributed to a 129% annual growth in sales from £3.4m in 2004 to £17.7m in 2006.
