Brothers Clinton and Spencer McCarthy built upmarket homes until they discovered that retirement homes had bigger profit margins. They switched to this sector in 2000 and now build high-density developments for the over-sixties on brownfield sites. The Hampshire company covers the area from Devon to Kent, and opened a Birmingham office last year. Its homes sold for an average of £187,000 in 2004, an increase of 30% since 2002. This has boosted profits, which rose 70% a year from £1.1m in 2000 to £5.3m in 2003.
