Willie Haughey founded Glasgow-based City Refrigeration in 1985 to service fridges in pubs and hotels. A contract with Asda in 1996 transformed the company into a complete facilities manager that cleans and maintains business premises. It helps to keep 255 Asda stores running 24 hours a day and also cleans Spirit Group and Punch Tavern pubs, carrying out refurbishments when necessary. Other customers include Anheuser-Busch and Shell. The company’s sales have increased nearly 75% a year from £33.1m in 1999 to £177m in 2002. City Refrigeration has its own charitable trust where staff donations are matched pound for pound by its board of directors. So far, it says it has raised more than £500,000 for worthy causes.
