Profit Track 100

David Gee left a national distribution firm in 1979 to set up City Truck, initially operating from his bedroom with just three vans. Now, 21 years later, the group operates over 1,500 vehicles across 28 locations in the UK. Once the UK’s largest distributor of musical instruments, Milton Keynes-based City Truck established a highly profitable specialist chemicals and industrial division in 1996. Profits have risen 33% pa from £1.8m in 1995 to £4.2m in 1998. Sales rose by 12% pa in the same period to £48m. Gee attributes profit growth to the company’s shift into the chemical and industrial distribution sector, along with gaining the annual distribution account for a global soft drinks company. After starting with freight and express delivery work, City Truck acquired Scantruck in 1986 in order to expand its contract maintenance work on customers’ trucks.
