City Truck

David Gee founded City Truck Group in 1979 with just three vans. He now has a fleet of more than 1,500 vehicles at 28 sites across the UK. The Buckinghamshire-based haulier started out as a distributor of musical instruments but now concentrates on the storage and distribution of chemicals and other industrial materials. Profits at City Truck increased 39% a year, from £2.3m in 1996 to £6.1m in 1999, when sales reached £64.8m. According to Gee, this growth has been driven by a shift in focus towards warehouse storage services and distribution contracts, for which costs are fixed and margins more stable. City Truck appears on the Profit Track 100 for the second year running.
