Founded in 2004, Cognita now comprises 66 private schools in Britain, Spain, South America and southeast Asia. Private-equity firm KKR bought a substantial stake from the company’s other backer, Bregal Capital, in 2013, and Cognita used those funds to buy a school in Brazil and a share in nine schools in Chile. It also invested more than £58m in its existing school portfolio last year. Overseas sales reached £140.1m in 2014, under chief executive Rees Withers, 62.
