Former chief inspector of schools Chris Woodhead founded Cognita in 2004 with backing from Bregal Capital. Through acquisitions, the company now comprises 55 private junior and senior schools. Most are in Britain, but Cognita also has schools in Spain, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam and Brazil. The business generated £82.7m in overseas sales last year. Its chief executive is Rees Withers, 60.
