Founded in 2004, Cognita now comprises 66 private schools in Britain, Spain, South America and southeast Asia. Private-equity firm KKR bought a substantial stake from the company’s other backer, Bregal Capital, in 2013. Recent investments include schools in Brazil and a share in nine schools in Chile. It also invested more than £58m in its existing school portfolio last year. Rees Withers, 62, is chief executive.
