While working as an IT contractor, Adam Afriyie saw many companies fail to complete IT projects on time and within budget. That made him decide to set up his own IT consultancy, Connect Support Services. ‘I saw a place for a company not just promising professional reliable services, but delivering them,’ says Afriyie, who started up in 1993. The London firm now has several arms, taking on IT work for large companies, offering support to smaller firms that do not have their own IT departments, and developing software. Customers include Barclays Bank and Vodafone. They have helped drive up sales 102% a year from £378,000 in 1997 to £3.1m in 2000, when the company had 64 staff.
