Founded by Simon Stott in Cheshire in 1989 with a bank overdraft of £150k Countrywide Consortium is the sole franchisor on the list. The family-run business maintains the grounds at 20,000 schools, hospitals, water-boards, and blue chip companies, including 4,000 of BT’s sites. It also has a master franchise in Madrid. Roughly 85% of new contracts are generated by a tele-sales team who call hundreds of prospective customers daily, faxing order inquiries along to franchisees in their area. Part of the £8.5m company’s strategy involves linking its 50 franchisees closely to the company to share knowledge and keep franchisee turnover down. Of the handful of franchisees who’ve sold out, all have been snapped up by other franchisees.
