John Rawnsley, 49, worked for years in finance and manufacturing before spotting the opportunity to start his own company at the end of the recession. With the help of co-founders Andrew Hutchinson, 43, and brother David, 39 — who run a similar business in Northern Ireland — CP Hire was launched in 2012 from a Portakabin. The Cardiff-based firm hires out construction machinery, such as excavators, trailers and dumper lorries; it has more than 2,000 vehicles, available from its five depots, based from Birmingham to Newbury; the firm also offers consulting and data collection services on projects. It achieved sales of £12.7m in 2019, and plans to invest in more machinery and to open a new depot in Hertfordshire next year.
