Chesterfield-based fuel distributor CPL Industries provides smokeless coal to a third of the British households that still use it. This year, it launched a range of coal briquettes made from biomass that it says may lower CO2 emissions by up to 25%. CPL is owned by Royal Bank of Scotland and Vision Capital, and led by new chief executive Timothy Minett. Sales fell to £274.3m in 2008 as an unusually mild winter cut demand.
