Crowdcube’s 300,000 registered members have backed some 450 enterprises with more than £200m cash since the Exeter firm was started by Darren Westlake, 47, and Luke Lang, 38, in 2010. Its technology has created a new generation of armchair investors, and has provided a new way for businesses – from craft brewers to fintechs – to raise funds. Backed by a £27m investment from venture capital firms and 4,000 individuals, it says that in the first half of 2016 more than 1 in 10 UK equity fundraisings were completed on its platform, including in March when challenger bank Monzo raised £1m from 1,800 investors in 96 seconds.
