This company is using online lifestyle and cultural content, including video, animation and illustration, created by its editorial hubs and network of 300 freelance contributors, to inspire a mostly millennial audience; and it has grown unique users from 4m a month to more than 18m in under two years. Chief executive Kris Naudts, 45, a former psychiatrist with a PhD in neuroscience, founded the company in 2011. Culture Trip’s proprietary AI-based algorithms recommend stories which tell users what is unique about a place, its people and its culture. It aims to become the first port of call for content about locations around the world and capture revenue through booking links in its 1,600 monthly stories. It has raised a total of $103m, including a $80m series B round in April, led by the international investment fund PPF Group.
