Investing £1,000 of his personal savings, Simon Craig first set up shop in his mother’s basement – later usurping the kitchen, then the entire house – to create a cable installation business. To get customers, he rang up people he’d installed cable for while working at British Telecom. Real growth came with a lucky break in 1992 when a former colleague at BT and erstwhile employee joined up with a television cable company and hired Custom Cable – launching its cable television installation division. Craig says keeping on top of rapidly changing technology is his biggest challenge. To explain new industry developments, an R&D leader holds monthly technology lectures for other department heads. Additionally, Craig says the ISO9000- certified business invests hundreds of thousands annually training employees and shipping them off to seminars. No longer operating out of her home, his mother works at the £6.7m company in Surrey as a wages clerk.
