It is likely that a few pints of Thwaites will be raised to the memory of this Blackburn brewery’s eponymous founder as it celebrates its bicentenary this year. The company, still controlled by Daniel Thwaites’s descendants, the Yerburgh family, has since expanded beyond brewing. It operates an estate of 420 tied pubs and owns the seven-strong Shire Hotels chain plus the five-star Stafford Hotel in St James’s Place in London. Sales totalled £162.7m in 2007.
