Arthur Darlington founded Darlingtons in 1930 with one lorry and some horses. He started out transporting farm produce around the Wirral, Merseyside. The company continues its transport activities, buying gravel, sand and salt and selling it to schools and councils. A move into the paper industry in 1999, when Darlingtons took on a new managing director, Philip Honor, gave it fresh impetus. Its main activity now is buying, storing, and distributing paper for customers across northwest England. Sales have grown 91% a year from £678,000 in 1997 to £4.7m in 2000, when it had 50 staff.
