In January this year, the Dewhirst family sold its controlling share in the eponymous clothing business to management led by David Witt and Scott Beattie. The deal comes two and a half years after the Dewhirsts took the company off the London Stock Exchange in a £113m management buyout. In an effort to compete with foreign manufacturers, the company has moved its production abroad to Morocco, Indonesia and Malaysia. Sales to customers, which include Marks & Spencer, totalled £407m in the year to January 2003.
