DFS

DFS has survived the tough times in the home-furnishing sector over the past few years, taking market share from rivals going out of business. Now with 80 stores, often on out-of-town retail parks, DFS reckons it is Britain’s biggest sofa maker and retailer. Advent International bought the company from founder Lord Kirkham for a reported £500m last year and has plans to open 20 new stores over the next three years. Sales were £653m in 2010. The management is now led by chairman Richard Baker and chief executive Ian Filby, both of whom are former directors of Alliance Boots.
