DFS

Offering four years’ interest-free credit and employing designers such as Linda Barker has helped this sofa superstore chain sell more than 27,000 pieces of furniture each week. DFS was founded nearly 40 years ago by chairman Lord Kirkham with a strategy of value for money. With three factories in Yorkshire and the Midlands, the Doncaster company reckons it is Britain’s largest sofa manufacturer, making 20% of the furniture it sells. DFS floated in 1993, but Kirkham regained control in 2004 in a £508m deal. Sales were £611m in 2007.
