Direct Ferries’ website lets travellers compare and book ferries on more than 1,000 routes in Europe and north Africa. The website has localised versions in 19 countries and 15 languages, and last year the company launched a ferry booking site for mobile devices. Chief executive Howard Davies founded his ticketing company in 1999, moving the business online three years later. Adding more routes and improving its website have helped international sales rise 24% a year from £17.6m in 2009 to £27.2m in 2011. Overseas revenue represents total ticket sales rather than commission.
