The Direct Group was set up in 1990 by John Dunhill, Nigel Clack and Geoff Woodhead, who had wide experience in the insurance, financial services and motor industries. The Yorkshire company works with blue-chip clients, including Bank of Scotland, to design insurance packages for their customers. It then advises its clients on how to sell these packages. For example, if someone takes out a car loan with a bank, Direct will advise the bank on ways to sell other products such as credit protection. Sales have grown 68% a year, from £1.7m in 1996 to £8.3m in 1999.
