The products made in Doncasters’ 25 factories worldwide include parts for tanks and aircraft destined for America’s armed forces. As a result, the recent sale of this Derbyshire precision engineer to Dubai International Capital needed the approval – granted in April – of President George Bush. The deal netted £700m for Royal Bank of Scotland Private Equity, which had taken Doncasters private from the New York Stock Exchange in 2001 and merged it with Ross Catherall, another engineering company. Although Doncasters’ ownership has changed, the existing management team remains in place under chief executive Eric Lewis. The Derbyshire business, which posted sales of £448m in 2005, supplies components for industrial gas turbines, turbochargers, aerospace and medical use.
