Mike Clare opened his first bed shop in 1985 with £16,000. Two decades later he had 180 stores, and in 2008 sold the firm to Exponent for more than £200m. Now led by chief executive Nick Worthington, the bed retailer has continued to expand, but while sales grew to £256.1m in 2010, profits shrank 75% to £4.5m.
