Coventry’s Dunlop Standard Aerospace Group, bought by the venture capitalist Doughty Hanson for £510m in 1998, makes braking systems and other components for aircraft. It also services aircraft engines and has boomed as military and commercial operators have outsourced their repair and overhaul needs. Operating profits hit £65m on sales of £452m in 2002, when the company employed 3,964 people.
