It seems Americans cannot get enough of Dyson’s colourful, bagless vacuum cleaners. The manufacturer has won more than 20% of the US market, largely due to word-of-mouth endorsement and cameo television appearances. Together with growth in Japan, success in America helped to boost group sales to £470m and profits to £97m in 2005, giving an attractive margin of 21%. Founder James Dyson and his family still own the company, which has 1,450 employees and is based in Wiltshire.
