Simon and Angus Burnett set out to build the ‘Ritz of the car parking world’ when they founded Eaton Securities in a disused lot in Islington in 1993. They now have five central London car parks offering anything from dry cleaning and umbrellas when it rains, to scooter sales and storage facilities. The Burnetts, whose sites are in prime areas of London such as Jermyn Street, had a piece of luck recently. Their flagship site in Chelsea will be just outside London’s new congestion zone, so drivers can park there and take public transport – or a scooter bought from the company – into the City without being charged for driving in. Eaton’s sales have grown 95% a year from £681,000 in 1997 to £5m in 2000, when it employed 48 people.
