This recruitment firm started life in 1991 by placing technology specialists at the lower end of the salary scale. But four years later the founders, Ian Simpson and Paul Johnson, decided to focus on the premium end of the market. Today ECI Human Capital places executives across all sectors in the £70,000 to £200,000 salary bracket. The move proved successful, driving up sales 132% a year from £1.1m in 1997 to £13.9m in 2000, when the company had 80 staff. ECI employs researchers to track daily personnel changes in each sector and says it has a particular focus on the ‘recession proof’ pharmaceuticals industry, which now accounts for 20% of its revenue.
