After councils have collected our recycling, waste management companies wash and sort the items into different types, before selling them to businesses like ECO Plastics. The Lincolnshire firm puts plastics through its technically advanced sorting equipment – capable of sorting it into 11 different types – and sells them to customers that include Coca Cola. Under chief executive officer Jonathan Short, sales grew 50% a year, from £10.2m in 2008 to £34.6m in 2011. In July 2011 it raised £5m from investors including Ludgate Environmental Fund, which joined its existing backers.
