Mussy Kurt-Elli made his son, Aydin, promise to finish his medical studies at Edinburgh University before starting his first business. “He broke all the rules,” says Kurt-Elli, who provided the funding and, despite his son’s intransigence, allowed the second-year student to build the business part-time. Edinburgh Network Technologies, trading as Ednet, offers internet and telecoms services including dial-up, ADSL and leased lines, mainly to companies in the Edinburgh and Glasgow areas. Sales at the company, which is now run full-time by father and son, grew 95% a year from £327,000 in 1999 to £1.2m in 2001.
