Profit Track 100

Elisabeth the Chef has become one of the UK’s leading suppliers of cakes to large supermarket chains. After acquiring Birmingham-based Broadheath Foods Limited in 1995 and rebuilding its own fire-damaged bakeries to modern standards in 1997, Elisabeth the Chef achieved the production efficiencies needed to boost its profits by 40% pa from £1.4m in 1995 to £3.9m in 1998. Sales rose by 25% pa in the same period to £41m. The Leamington Spa baker’s performance was also helped by its theme cake business. Since 1996, it has held the exclusive UK licence to make all 20 Football Association Premier League club themed cakes, and it holds other licences for Star Wars and Rugrats cakes. Founded in 1928 and incorporated in 1981, the company was sold in 1999 by the founding Owen family to a management team led by Tony Harris.
