Leeds-based Elmwood Design is a consultancy that helps organisations to build their brands. More than 20 years ago, the agency’s chairman, Jonathan Sands, secured work with Asda, which led to opportunities to pitch for work with its parent company, Walmart. Following a successful tender, the company was able to set up a New York office that has since gone on to win more clients and drive international sales that have grown 96% a year, from £856,000 in 2006 to £3.3m in 2008.
