As revenues from mobile voice services fall, operators have focused on text messaging for growth. This has been good news for the London firm Empower, which designs messaging systems for mobile operators, enabling them to deliver and manage mobile data as well as stream shows such as ITV’s Who Wants to be a Millionaire? to your handset. Headed by Keith Cornell, it won Hutchison 3G as a customer this year and supplies the Orange group across Europe. Its sales have risen 95% a year from £1.6m in 2002 to £5.9m in 2004, when the company made a significant loss.
