It is likely that some of your post each morning derives from Encore Direct’s factory at Long Marston, near York. The company has orders to make about 10m envelopes a week for the likes of Lloyds TSB, Tesco and Marks & Spencer. Encore Direct was founded in 1995 by Tony and Jane Gill with £3.7m from the sale of their previous envelope business. Taking their sales director, Russell Croisdale, with them, they set up Encore in a derelict National Grid warehouse. They say growth has been sustained by good customer service, with rapid delivery times and a flexible response to orders, and that they will print envelopes in any shape, colour or design. Sales have grown 106% a year from £1.3m in 1997 to £11.4m in 2000, when the company had 105 staff.
