This Lancashire firm maintains the infrastructure of utility companies and public-sector organisations, operating from 170 sites. It bought the maintenance firm Accord for £195m last year. Recently it has secured several large contracts, including a deal to collect waste from 214,000 homes in Manchester. The company’s clients include the Ministry of Defence, BT, Thames Water and Liverpool city council. Chief executive Owen McLaughlin and finance director Neil Kirkby led a £594m public-to-private deal last year, backed by the private-equity house 3i. Sales reached an annualised £766m in 2007 and are expected to rise with the Accord acquisition.
