Cheshire-based Environmental Waste Controls began as an importer of waste compactors from Germany and Holland but has extended the scope of its business over the years. It now also leases the machines and transports the waste for disposal. Because businesses are charged for the volume of waste they create, a compacting machine can halve their bills. Founded in 1993 by Bill Edwards and Julian Watts, the company recently won seven-year contracts to handle the disposal of waste for Blackpool, Darwen and Blackburn district councils. Sales have increased 65% a year from £1.2m in 1999 to £5.6m in 2002.
