Tech Track 100

The over-sixties are entitled to free bus travel in England, a scheme that has benefited the smart-card developer ESP Systex. The Hull company prints and encodes smart cards used for concessionary travel, and its clients include the Department for Transport and Traffic Wales. Founders Terry Dunn and Robin Ellis worked in barcode printing before setting up ESP Systex in 1994. They are now investigating mobile ticketing – a technology that sends virtual tickets to mobile phones. Sales have grown 65% a year from £1.8m in 2005 to £8.1m in 2008.
