Run by Colin Iles, European Metal Recycling claims to handle more than half of the 2m cars scrapped in Britain each year, putting one through its shredders every 30 seconds. Its sales leapt £230m to £829m in 2003, the latest figures. EMR has 65 sites in Britain and abraod, where it also processes scrap metal for steel companies, and disposes of some 600,000 fridges annually. The Warrington firm is owned by Philip Sheppard and his family.
