This company was founded in 1994 and has become one of the world’s largest metal recyclers. It buys scrap from Ford, Rover, Honda and local council landfills. After processing it, the firm sells it to steel companies for re-smelting.
Some 2m cars are scrapped in Britain each year and European Metal Recycling handles 1.2m of them, putting a car through its shredders every 30 seconds. It also handles 7m tonnes of other metallic scrap. EU laws requiring higher environmental standards have benefited the Warrington company, helping it to raise profits 57% a year from £7.3m in 1998 to £28.2m in 2001.
