The first freight train to run on the new Channel Tunnel Rail Link in April this year was emblazoned with the initials EWS. Spun out of British Rail during its privatisation, EWS now moves more than 100m tonnes of freight by rail every year. Its 500 locomotives carry materials across Britain and on to the Continent through the Channel tunnel. The new rail link will help its export operations. Sales in 2003 totalled £527m.
