Spun out of British Rail during its privatisation, EWS now moves more than 100m tonnes of freight by rail every year. Its 690 locomotives carry materials across Britain and onto the Continent through the Channel tunnel. Operating profits nearly doubled to £59m in the latest 2002 accounts, when the company had sales of £548m and 6,174 staff.
