Demand for more affordable and flexible private tuition led Bill Mills, 48, to set up Explore Learning in 2001. It provides English and maths coaching for 25,000 children in more than 100 centres, almost half of which are located in Sainsbury’s supermarkets. Graphite Capital backed a buyout in 2012, valuing the Guildford-based company at about £30m. Explore opened its first overseas centres in Texas this year, with plans to roll out across the US. Sales reached £25.9m in 2013.
