Machines made by Extec are used to separate sand and topsoil, and to recycle building materials for large construction companies. They are built at plants in Sheffield and Swadlincote, Derbyshire, and 80% of them are exported, going as far as Australia and Hawaii. Profits of the Derbyshire company have risen 60% a year from £2m in 1998 to £8.1m in 2001, when it had 313 staff.
