Mike Hayward and Jeremy McGrail launched Extra Personnel to link locally unemployed people with local businesses. Originally financed in 1992 with a business angel investment from a couple who owned a car dealership, the £9.4m company is now internally financed with the help of overdraft facilities from the bank. It competes in an overcrowded market by operating 24 hours a day. Its customers are mainly local authorities and small businesses in the West Midlands. Since its founding, the business has branched out from its industrial recruitment roots to include industries such as transportation and technology. Its biggest challenge, says chief executive, Hayward, is finding and retaining enough motivated workers locally.
