Building everything from compact studios to lavish riverside penthouses, this construction firm was set up by Dennis Cope in 1961 and has gone on to become one of the largest housebuilders in southeast England. General London Construction Holdings, which trades as Fairview, is responsible for some 28,000 homes and is currently developing about 30 sites. In 2002 the company increased sales by £173m to £435m and achieved operating profits of £90m. It had 917 employees at the time. After just three years of being listed on the stock exchange, the company was taken private in 2001 in a £300m deal backed by 3i and Bank of Scotland.
